Job Opportunity: R&D Principal Engineer

The Role

Reporting to the R&D Manager

The Position

The position would suit a candidate with relevant industrial experience looking for a new challenge where a wide range of skills and techniques are utilised.  An engineer who has wide experience in a number of fields and is keen to work within a small team.

Main Duties


  • Acquire customer requirements and from these generate detailed product specifications.
  • Generate innovative product potential solutions, and apportion these to Electronics Hardware, Software, and Embedded firmware functions.
  • Understand regulatory requirements and industrial standards and be able to implement them into product/system designs.
  • Be a key part of the R&D project team throughout the entire product design process from initial experimentation through to Production release.
  • Advise departmental manager on Electronics and software planning.

Skills and Experience

  • Analogue and mixed signal – practical understanding of op-amps, ADC and DAC preferably high resolution (e.g. audio or instrumentation).
  • Linear and switch mode power supply design for low power circuits.
  • Hardware design of microcontroller based designs.
  • Understanding of Software (PC and embedded) design processes.
  • Design for EMC & EMC test methods.
  • Data communications experience with RS422/485 & USB.
  • Sensor development.
  • Project Management in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Technical supervision of Electronics and Software design functions.
  • Technical lead background with customer facing experience.
  • Simulation and calculation of designs.
  • Design for Manufacture and Test.
  • High level of I.T competence including MS Office software.
  • BSc or BEng (or higher) in appropriate Electronic Engineering discipline or similar with industrial experience.

Hours and Salary

The position is for a 37.5 hour week, Monday to Friday. Salary TBC depending on experience.
