Acoustic systems are often used for long-range detection, but these are much more effective when paired with magnetic systems. Acoustic systems have some limitations; the use of magnetics provides a reliable means of detecting ferromagnetic masses.

For low-power requirements, the Mag648/Mag649 and Mag900/901 are ideal for these applications. The Mag-13 is also suitable when power is not limited.

For marine applications, the Mag648S sensor can be used in arrays, or in a network of buoys deployed around the perimeter of key infrastructure. Other unpackaged sensors are also suitable when integrated into a pressure vessel.
