Space Weather and GIC
Solar activity sends currents of highly charged particles across the solar system. These particles cause auroras when they interact with the magnetosphere. They also create strong changes in Earth’s magnetic field, the intensity in change being greatest at higher latitudes. The impact can be major for satellites and power networks.
High-precision vector magnetometers such as Mag-13 are deployed to monitor changes in the Earth’s magnetic field. The data provided helps assess the intensity and impact of solar events. This data is especially useful to research institutes offering forecast services, and to power companies aiming to protect their networks and transformers.
An alternative may to monitor and mitigate the impact of solar events for power networks is to monitor Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC) in transmission lines. Deployment requires a large number of sensors in a remote area, which will typically need to offer lower power consumption and low costs. Sensors such as the Mag648 and Mag649 are ideally suited for this type of deployment. Related Products
